Usually the cheese, crackers, fruits, nuts and meats would be served on a wooden charcuterie board. It sometimes has pickles and olives, titbits and sandwiches, many sorts of cheeses, bacon, ham and chorizo sausages and salami. It is up to the person making the charcuterie board and what sort of crowd he or she is entertaining.

I think this is a great idea to serve people who just appear at your door step when it is a day that you have not planned to cook but laze on the couch and watch movies or read. Grab whatever you have around and assemble it on a tray. Personally, I think if someone is going to drop in unexpected, they should bring food and drinks (and dessert too!) I don't mind making a huge pot of tea then.
